The day will be dedicated to discovering one of the most iconic landscapes of Réunion:
a journey to the active volcano!

We’ll start early to stay ahead of the clouds.
Our first stop will be at Nez de Bœuf, offering a breathtaking view of the Rivière des Remparts, a massive volcanic valley.

We’ll then stop at Commerson Crater, a dramatic explosion crater and a perfect example of Réunion’s volcanic origins.

The road continues through the Pas des Sables pass and across the lunar landscape of the Plaine des Sables, before reaching the edge of the current caldera of the Piton de la Fournaise.
If weather allows, we’ll take a longer break to enjoy the scenery near the main crater.

Picnic lunch is planned along the Route du Volcan or, in case of poor weather, at Pas de Bellevue.

We’ll end the day with a visit to the Cité du Volcan, a modern and interactive museum created by the famous French volcanologist couple, the Kraffts.
(Alternative: if the museum is skipped, we’ll add two scenic stops on the west coast.)

Return to the hotel is expected around 4:00 p.m.

Itinerary

7:00 a.m. – Departure from Saint-Gilles
8:45 a.m. – Stop at Nez de Bœuf (photo stop – 15 min)
9:15 a.m. – Stop at Commerson Crater (photo stop – 20 min)
9:40 a.m. – Stop at Pas des Sables and Plaine des Sables (20 min)
10:20–11:30 a.m. – Stop at Pas de Bellecombe (depending on weather, otherwise descent to Col de Bellevue)
12:00–1:30 p.m. – Picnic along the Route du Volcan (or at Col de Bellevue)
1:50–3:10 p.m. – Visit to the Cité du Volcan
(Alternative: no museum visit, but stops at Le Gouffre and Étang-Salé)
4:00 p.m. – Return to the hotel

Itinerary and stops may be adapted according to weather or traffic conditions, to ensure the best possible experience on the day of the excursion.
